Serene face
This wooden face from a coffin is beautifully carved with fine features and a sense of serenity can be felt from the expression and realism of the craftsmanship. The eyes and brows are inlaid with glass. Blue glass fills the brows and liner of the eyes, whereas the eyes themselves are white and black inlay, giving them a realistic glisten in the light, almost bringing this face of an ancient Egyptian to life.
It dates from around the end of the 18th Dynasty, and to the trained eye, the face does display the quality and style of the artisans of that time period. It was acquired by the Musée du Louvre in 1921 and is currently still on display there.
The owner of the coffin is sadly unknown to us, but they must have been a person of status or wealth to afford such a quality of sarcophagus for their burial.
