Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) solar power plant
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) signed a cooperation agreement with the Industrial Modernization Center and the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority at the Electricity Ministry, to establish a solar power plant, for the museum’s buildings.
This comes within the framework of the goals of the Sustainable Development Strategy and Egypt’s Vision 2030. This cooperation is going to be achieved to maintain environmental balance, encourage the transition towards a greener economy, spread environmentally friendly practices, and use renewable energy sources that achieve sustainable development, especially the production of electricity from solar energy.
Development strategy:
The General Supervisor of GEM, Atef Moftah, said during the signing ceremony that the museum had taken into account the implementation of a strategy for sustainable development, and the integration of the environmental dimension in all its activities. He also reviewed the efforts made to achieve the sustainability goals, and the importance of using renewable and clean energy sources.
This is to be implemented in line with the museum being environmentally friendly, especially in line with it recently obtaining the Gold Certificate for Green Building, and the Green Building Award, during the Arab Water Forum.
Solar cells:
The Executive Director of the Industrial Modernization Center, Mohamed Abdel-Karim, said that the small grid-connected solar cell systems “Egypt-PV” are implemented by the center, in partnership with the United Nations Development Program, with a grant provided by the Japanese government, in cooperation with the Electricity Ministry.
Attending the celebration:
The ceremony was attended by Oka Hiroshi, the Japanese ambassador in Cairo, Alessandro Fracassetti, the resident representative of the United Nations Development Program, and a group of leaders and officials of the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Is the new Egyptian Museum open yet?
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which is expected to be the biggest museum in the world devoted to a single civilization, will include a solar power plant, completely embracing Egypt’s continued commitment to renewable energy sources.
Work is nearing a close at Egypt’s Grand Museum in Giza, a 490,000 sq m project that will hold the complete Tutankhamun collection and be the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation.
The contractor for the scheme is a 50/50 joint venture between Besix of Belgium and Orascom of Egypt. The team says the main building and overall site are now 99.8% completed and security systems are at 97%.
