Egypt Museum is a virtual collection of ancient Egyptian art, culture and history. Sharing the treasures in museums and exhibitions from across the world in one place. We hope you enjoy browsing the endless artefacts and jewellery, artworks and sculptures, tombs, temple reliefs and even mummies that we will share with you here.
This website provides educational content about the art and artifacts of ancient Egypt, including pieces from the Predynastic period to later eras. The site is not a physical museum but an online resource for those interested in the extensive history and archaeological findings of ancient Egypt.
Our aim is to make the study of Ancient Egypt simple yet informative for both academic students and armchair Egyptologists. The Egyptians believed they would live on as long as their name was spoken, and their image remembered, and that is our goal here at Egypt-Museum.
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square in Cairo has opened to the world since 1902.
The Egyptian Museum is a product of a competition launched by the Egyptian Government in 1895 and thus it is considered the first national museum in the Middle East. The original collection, established in the late 19th century, was previously housed at a building in Bulaq. Afterwards it was transferred to the palace of Khedive Ismail in Giza, until its definitive resting place was completed.
Although we are a virtual museum with no connection to any official museum, we are Egyptian based and made with passion for Egyptology. Everything we post here is official and factual, and if opinions are ever posted, that will always be acknowledged. We strive for truth and education, and we hope you enjoy our efforts.
In total, the Egyptian Museum in Cairo exhibits some 130,000 artefacts, with another 30,000 held in storage. And that is just one museum alone, so imagine the artefacts spread around the rest of the museums in Egypt and around the world. That is why we hope to present these to you in one place, with easy access and understanding, while also presenting the current house of each item (if possible).
Egyptian artefacts tell us the story of over five thousand years of ancient civilization. Egyptian relics span from the Pre-dynastic Period before Egypt unified, to the early age of the Old Kingdom pyramid builders.
The Middle Kingdom age of restoration, the golden age of the glorious Egyptian empire to the last native Egyptian rulers of the Late Period or Saite Period. The three Intermediate Periods are also acknowledge and delivered unique Egyptian iconography and showcase the empire under foreign rule, from the Libyans to the Greeks. All of these periods showcase an in depth glance at a changing yet eerily structured and uniquely rigidly run empire through its varied ages and stages of wealth and glory.
It is an unfortunate fact of museology that archaeological collections from before the 1960s have terrible records. Many did not originate from systematic excavations, but from miscellaneous private donors. Those that did came from excavations that often worked in bulk, leaving museum staff to handle cataloguing of materials they may not have been familiar with – or were simply too numerous to dedicate to properly handle. With our page Egypt-Museum, we hope to rectify that.
It is not the official Egyptian Museum
Egypt-Museum, as stated numerous times above, is not part of any Egyptian Museum. But if you would like to ask us questions, or if you work for a museum and would like us to write a piece for you or to help organise things. Ancient Egypt is our passion, and we love to share it with the world. If you have any contributions, or requests upon content material or feedback, please feel free to contact us.
